Donegal Art Galleries

Donegal is rich in many things and the arts are just another area where it excels. You can find many talented artists with international reputations around the county and their work and those of famous artists across the world can be found at the many superb Donegal art galleries. We look at some of the best below:

An Gailearaí can be found in the Falcarragh area of Donegal. It is a professional art gallery which focuses upon contemporary visual art. They have a host of opportunities for established and aspiring artists to exhibit their work as part of their annual exhibition programme and they especially welcome work that reflects Irish speaking Gaeltacht culture.

Professional Irish artist Stephen Bennett runs his own gallery close to his home in Ardara, Co. Donegal. It hosts a selection of Stephen’s latest work as well as limited edition prints. Having started out as a commercial artist in London he moved home to his native Donegal in 1992 to pursue his passion for fine art. His work can be found in galleries throughout the country as well as at his studio in Ardara.

Man Made Images photo gallery in Mountcharles, Co.Donegal has been operational since late 2006 and in that short space of time it has become lauded by both the national and international media. The gallery specialises in exhibiting highly artistic photographers from across the globe. The works range from fine art photography to wild life photography. Some of the more internationally recognised artists to have had exhibits here include Steve Bloom, Sean Hillen and Rebekka Gudleifsdottir.

The Cristeph Gallery is Donegal’s oldest art gallery. Located in Letterkenny it offers everything from picture framing facilities to a gallery which displays local and international artists.

An Clachan Gweedore

An Clachan Art & Craft Gallery in Gweedore, Co.Donegal is unique as it is born from the artistic community, it’s an artist led initiative which aims to provide artists with exhibition opportunities as well as having studio spaces on site for the artists to avail of. The gallery contains a wide selection of original arts and crafts. It also has the honour of being named as one of the three must visit galleries in Ireland by House and Home magazine.

The Cavanacor Gallery in Lifford, Co. Donegal is committed to contemporary art and exhibits work from national and international artists ranging from emerging talent to international artisans.

Glebe House and Gallery is located near Lake Gartan in Co. Donegal. This regency house was built in 1828 and is accentuated by decorative Islamic and Japanese art. Guided tours of the house are limited to 15 people and within the premises you will also find the Derek Hill collection which features works by some of the most prominent artists of all time including Picasso and Kokoshka.

Straid Studio Gallery in Glencolmcille, Co. Donegal hosts the work of marine painter Kenneth King and invites those artists with an interest in the sea to get in contact. Working primarily in oils his work depicts the naval and merchant shipping of Ireland, Irish lighthouses and seascapes of Donegal. His work has been commissioned by both state and private sector shipping interests , the RNLI and An Post to name but a few.
