North West Ireland Golf Destination – The North and West Coast Links of Ireland has been named “European Golf Destination of the Year 2011” by the International Association of Golf Tour Operators (IAGTO). Over 1,200 industry professionals from 60 countries attended the annual awards ceremony in Valencia, Spain on the 18 November 2010.

The IAGTO Virgin Atlantic Golf Travel Awards was established in 2000 and are the official annual awards for the golf tourism industry. At this years awards 350 international golf tour operators from 52 countries voted and initially selected 20 European golfing regions before eventually choosing a shortlist of six finalists.
In the end North and West Links Golf Ireland beat off stiff competition from Fife in Scotland (home to the world famous Old Course at St. Andrews), Tenerife, the Czech Republic, Murcia in Spain and Lisbon in Portugal.
The European award gives the North and West links the recognition they deserve amongst their global counterparts.The region has injected significant investment over the last 10 years to bring their golf product up to the standards expected from today’s golfer. Indeed it’s no surprise a selection of the world’s top golfers have visited the area in this period including Rory McIlroy, Tom Watson and Nick Faldo
The Golf Courses Involved
Initially set up as a small marketing cooperative over 20 years ago, North and West Links Golf has grown from just four clubs to 12 of the finest courses in Ireland. The clubs, including 5 from Donegal, are as follows:-

According to John Mc Laughlin, General Manager of North and West Coast Links, this is a good news story for the hotel and wider tourism sector in this region of Ireland.
