This country house was built in the 1800’s and transformed into a high quality restaurant in 1980 formally known as St John’s Restaurant and re-named as the Red Door Restaurant and Bar in February 2009.
Enjoy the gardens and panoramic views of Lough Swilly and the large amount of wildlife in the area – notably swans and geese from the Inch Island Reserve. The Restaurant is located only 10mins drive from Derry City and 3mins drive from Buncrana Town and just 2 mins drive from The North West Golf Club. The Red Door offers a spectacular setting for your perfect wedding, with its exclusive location, unrivalled scenery and fantastic variation of colour in every season. Although the building and setting will be familiar to returning diners – and fans will be glad to find that the little old-fashioned bar at the side, and its open fire, are still there – the new owners have done a major interior revamp and landscaped the gardens. And, of course, there is a welcoming red door.
With bay windows everywhere and bevelled glass doors, the building is bright and the rooms have interesting shapes (also open fires, although all are gas except for the bar); each room is named according to the décor or character – The Willow Room, The Violet Room, The View, The Red Room – and there’s a covered refuge for smokers.
All round, a meal here should be a very enjoyable outing – it’s a beautiful place, the food is pleasing and, under the direction of Restaurant Manager Frances Doherty, the lovely staff are efficient, and very attentive.

Went to the Red Door for an anniversary dinner with 4 people. On arrival I was met by Peter, who got us our drinks, showed us the menu, our seats and the specials. The food was excellent and afterwards we had drinks at the bar and there was live music, which was a bonus. Peter the barman gave us a good laugh, he was there until the end of the night and sorted out taxis for us – I can see he is a great asset to the business. Like I said, the food was excellent and the location was perfect. In general, the staff were very friendly and I would definitely recommend the Red Door to others.
