Carndonagh Donegal

Carndonagh is the main town of northern Inishowen and is an important educational and shopping centre. The local area has been an ecclesiastical centre of note for many centuries. Best known of its historical and archaeological remains is the 7th century Donagh Cross, located along the western approach to the town.

Not far away are the attractive small towns or villages of Malin and Culdaff. Malin is a past winner of the title of Ireland’s tidiest town. Culdaff is the birthplace, in 1690, of the playwright Charles Macklin i.e. McLoughlin.

Macklin became one of the most celebrated men of the theatre in mid 18th century London and drew on his experiences in Inishowen in many of his plays.
