Rosapenna Golf Club

Rosapenna Golf Club offers the chance for links golfers to compare and contrast the traditional, old-style links, created by Old Tom Morris, Braid and Vardon and recently redesigned by Pat Ruddy with the modern Sandy Hills links started by the renowned Eddie Hackett and completed with great aplomb by Pat Ruddy.

Old Tom Morris Course- Par 71 – 6,612 Yards
The original Course at Rosapenna has been touched by some of the greatest golf course designers in history, including Old Tom Morris, Harry Vardon and James Braid. In 2009 the new Strand Nine opened at Rosapenna  to replace the original back nine which played across the main road on a number of holes.

Laid out by Pat Ruddy of the European Club these new links holes, which have striking views across Mulroy Bay, have matured to a condition that will see them settle into the Old Tom Morris Links to provide a seamless connection between each nine.Running to just under 7,000 yards off the championship markers the Strand and Valley nines are a testing combination of traditional and modern links holes which bridge a century of golf design influences.

Sandy Hills Links – 7,155 Yards – Par 71
This wonderful course was opened in June 2003 and is becoming one of the most famous golf courses in Ireland. Whereas Old Tom settled for a course flanking the dunes, Pat Ruddy has gone right through them from start to finish and created an breath-taking course that will test any golfer. Each hole is spectacular and the views across the Old Tom Morris course to the ocean will sooth all the wounds inflicted by this fantastic golf course.

For the professionals that will undoubtedly play here, the course measures 7,155 yards. Not that long you might think – but the par is 71. For amateurs the medal tees are sufficiently ambitious – the dunes have been so little travelled that balls straying off the fairway will almost always be just hacked back into play.

From the tees, landing areas are clearly discernible and the definition provided by the dunes is outstanding. From the fairways the traditional links bump and run is seldom an option – accurate approach shots are required to large, elevated greens tucked into the dunes and protected by bunkers that can be properly called hazards. Almost every hole on  the Sandy Hills course is in a subtly different direction adding to the challenge in breezy conditions.
